Experiment outside of the box with a unique Lomo camera
If you’re an amateur photographer or even a passing enthusiast then you’ll have heard of the Lomo camera at some point in time. These specialized camera types comes in a variety of different models that are popular for the unique images that they can create; perhaps not always the sharpest picture but definitely one that stands out. The name Lomo or ‘the Leningrad Optical and Mechanical Union’ was a Soviet based company founded in 1914 that developed and produced a range of specialized optical instruments including projectors, handheld super 8 movie cameras and even a range of spy cameras and gun sights used during the first world war.
Today the Lomo plc Company still produces optical instruments for use by the military, criminology departments and several other specialized fields, but they are more popularly known for their range of creative Lomo camera models. In the beginning engineers at Lomo wanted to develop a simple point and shoot camera that was compact enough to be carried around by the average person in their day to day life. The first Lomo camera to make it onto the store shelves in 1984 was the Lomo LCA model based entirely on a small compact Japanese point and shoot camera called the Cosina CX2.
The Lomo LCA is a 35mm compact film camera that came with manual shutter speed and aperture controls similar to those found on other SLR cameras at that time, allowing for more control over the final image. Though what people found impressive about this new improved point and shoot camera was the super sharp wide angle lens that could produce stunning images. Since then the Lomo Company has gone on to develop and produce a long line of unique manual and automatic analogue cameras that produce certain interesting affects, including medium format images, 360 degree panoramic views and 4×4 multiple action sequence shots. Where most manufacturers focus on creating cameras that take high quality sharp images, Lomo offers photographers a more flexible final image that will not be the same every time. Sometimes called ‘toy cameras’, Lomo plc develops out of the ordinary camera products, which suit any photographer wanting to break out of the realm of their strict formal photographic practice; all available at very affordable prices.
